Why the name Doulos?

Doulos Explained

What Does Doulos Mean?

Doulos (δοῦλος) is a Greek word meaning ‘servant’ or ‘bondservant’ — someone who willingly and completely devotes their life to serving their master.

The Greek word δοῦλος (doulos) is a significant term found over 120 times in the New Testament. While often translated as “servant” or “slave,” its meaning carries a depth beyond casual service.

A doulos is one who is bound to a master, whose will is entirely submitted to that master. It implies a willing, devoted, and all-encompassing commitment. In a positive biblical context, it refers to someone who has chosen to belong to God, serving Him with their whole life.

It’s not about drudgery or oppression, but about finding true purpose, identity, and freedom in belonging to and serving Jesus Christ, the ultimate loving Master.

What Does Doulos Mean in the Bible?

Key New Testament figures embraced this identity in relation to Christ.

Philippians 1:1

“Paul and Timothy, servants (douloi) of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi…”

Apostles like Paul identified themselves as ‘doulos’ of Christ, highlighting their complete devotion.

Romans 1:1

“Paul, a servant (doulos) of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God…”

Being a ‘doulos’ was integral to Paul’s identity and calling as an apostle.

Matthew 20:26-28

“…whoever would be great among you must be your servant (diakonos), and whoever would be first among you must be your slave (doulos), even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve (diakoneō), and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus Himself exemplified servant leadership, connecting greatness with being a ‘doulos’.

1 Corinthians 7:22

“For he who was called in the Lord as a slave (doulos) is a freedman of the Lord. Likewise he who was free when called is a slave (doulos) of Christ.”

In Christ, earthly status is redefined; all believers are ‘douloi’ of Christ, finding true freedom in His service.

Our prayer is that our lives and ministry as “Sailing Doulos” would faithfully reflect the heart of a true doulos of Jesus Christ.

The Story Behind the Name

We chose the name Doulos nearly a year before we even had a vessel to give it to.

Long before we knew what our ministry would look like, we knew we were called to be servants — wherever that calling led, and however we got there. Whether by land, air, or sea didn’t matter to us. What mattered was the calling itself. Over time, the Lord began shifting our path toward the water, calling us to serve as sailing servants, moving from place to place by sea.

But we wanted the name to carry more than just that idea. So we turned to Scripture searching for what word was used for “servant” throughout the bible. When we found “doulos,” it just seemed to fit. We went on searching Strong’s Concordance for every place the word “doulos” appears in the New Testament. The more we studied how and where it was used, the more certain we became: this was the word for us. Just as Paul called himself a doulos of Christ, devoted to encouraging believers and sharing His love with those who had yet to find the Way, we knew we were being called to the same posture of life.

And when we received our boat, the name took on yet another layer of meaning. We aren’t just sailing servants — we sail aboard Doulos, a vessel that is itself becoming a servant of the seas, carrying the gospel and aid wherever she goes.

One name. Three meanings. All pointing back to the same calling: to serve.
